The fonds contains material collected primarly by Stefan Janiček detailing the Brooke-Alverston, Ontario (Canada) Slovak community spanning a twenty-year period (1935-1955). The material was part of a genealogical project sponsored by the Canadian Slovak League Branch 20 Oil Spring. Peter Molčan joined the project at a later date. Included are photocopied press clippings and a Canadian Citizenship Certificate. The press clippings pertain to various members of the Slovak community from Brooke-Alverston region and gives an overview of the Slovak emigration experience from mid 1930s to 1950s.

The fonds also contains material from the Canadian Slovak League Branch 17 (Sarnia, Ontario). Peter Molčan was the President. Included is the Contributions Book for the Canadian Slovak League Branch 17, a Slovak flag signed by various delegates to a Slovak League Convention in 2016 and records related to membership dues, contributions to the parishes of St. Anthony in Chatham, Ontario and Our Lady of Sorrows in Sarnia, Ontario.

The Blodwen Piercy fonds contain records primarily related to her work as a board member and chapter representative for the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL). Documents include meeting minutes and notes, AGM records, efforts to lobby MPs, presentation material, petitions, internal organizing such as finances and memberships, correspondence, event promotions, pamphlets, media releases, newspaper clippings, articles, legal documents, research material, and many of Piercy’s notes. While the documents range from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, most of the CARAL material is from the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the Supreme Court struck down Canada’s abortion law and public debate intensified around the issue. Researchers will note that CARAL lobbied to prevent the passing of Bill C-43, which would have recriminalized abortion; there were also several court challenges which sought to limit abortion through the enshrinement of fetal and/or father’s rights. In addition to CARAL material, Piercy’s collection contains records related to other pro-choice groups including the Pro-Choice Action Network (PCAN), the Ontario Coalition of Abortion Clinics (OCAC), Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC), Planned Parenthood Ottawa, the Humanist Association of Ottawa, and more. In order to lobby against it, Piercy also collected material from anti-choice groups such as Human Life International, Campaign Life Coalition, and Operation Rescue. These textual records are supplemented by several CARAL posters; photographic slides from CARAL presentations; a large selection of pro-choice, feminist, and humanist buttons; CARAL t-shirts; a large CARAL Ottawa banner; and four tapes on which Piercy recorded news segments related to abortion (of particular interest is a CJOH Town Hall debate on abortion featuring women’s health provider and OCAC member Dr. Nikki Colodny). Moreover, Piercy corresponded directly with Dr. Henry Morgentaler, Norma Scarborough, and other nationally renowned pro-choice activists, and a sample of this is contained in the fonds.

Though the vast majority of Piercy’s collected material is related to abortion, there are also records related to contraception, the morning after pill, violence against women, teen pregnancy, and sexual abuse.

Please be advised that some of this material is incredibly graphic, featuring photographs of women who died from illegal abortion, and anti-choice images of aborted fetuses.
