    Biographical history

    William J. Turchan was born in Port Colborne, Ontario (Canada), the son of Pavol (Paul) and Margaret Turchan from Podkonice village, in the Banská Býstricka (Slovakia). Pavol, a laborer, soldier and a cabinetmaker, left his village in Slovakia in 1923 for Canada. His wife followed him in 1926.
    William Turchan attended Western University. He played for the Ottawa Rough Riders until he left his career as a professional footballer for teaching. He taught in Ottawa at the South Carleton High School and in Baden-Baden, Baden-Wurttenberg (Germany) for the Department of National Defence. He and his wife have a son Kurt.

    Scope and content

    This fonds consists of documents related to the Turchan family and various members of the Port Colborne, Ontario (Canada)'s Slovak community, their traditions, immigration experience, life in Slovakia, the National Slovak Benefit Society's Timmins chapter's administration and ""K-Cousins"", descendants from Podkonice village from Banská Býstricka (Slovakia).

    In 2021, Professor M. Mark Stolárik, holder of the Chair in Slovak History and Culture, contacted the archives regarding the donation of documents from William "Bill" J. Turchan. On January 18th, 2022, Professor Stolárik forwarded a small folder of documents related to the Slovak community in Port Colborne.
