William J. Turchan was born in Port Colborne, Ontario (Canada), the son of Pavol (Paul) and Margaret Turchan from Podkonice village, in the Banská Býstricka (Slovakia). Pavol, a laborer, soldier and a cabinetmaker, left his village in Slovakia in 1923 for Canada. His wife followed him in 1926.
William Turchan attended Western University. He played for the Ottawa Rough Riders until he left his career as a professional footballer for teaching. He taught in Ottawa at the South Carleton High School and in Baden-Baden, Baden-Wurttenberg (Germany) for the Department of National Defence. He and his wife have a son Kurt.
