Le premier programme Pathmakers a été lancé en 1986. Il s'agissait d'un partenariat entre l'Université d'Ottawa, l'Université Carleton, le Collège Algonquin et les quatre conseils scolaires du district d'Ottawa-Carleton. En 1997, Monique Frize a commencé à coordonner les activités, la collecte de fonds et la promotion du programme. Le but du programme était d'accroître l'intérêt des étudiantes du secondaire pour des domaines d'études non traditionnels. Le projet a réuni des étudiantes du secondaire et un certain nombre de jeunes femmes dans des établissements postsecondaires qui choisissent des domaines où les femmes sont sous-représentées. En 1997-1998, le programme a attiré plus de 250 bénévoles.

The original Pathmakers program was started in 1986. It was a partnership between the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College, and the four school boards in the Ottawa-Carleton district. In 1997, Monique Frize began to coordinate the activities, the fund-raising and the promotion of the program. The purpose of the program was to increase the interest of female high school students in non-traditional areas of study. The project brought together female high school students and a number of young women in post-secondary institutions who choose fields where women were under-represented. In 1997-1998, the program attracted over 250 volunteers.
