Biographical history

Marjorie Griffin Cohen is currently a professor at the Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. She completed her BA at Iowa Wesleyan University, her MA at New York University, her PhD at York University. She is specialized in the areas of political economy and public policy. She works more specifically on issues concerning the Canadian economy, women, labour, electricity deregulation, energy and the environment, and international trade agreements.  She was director and has served on several boards and commissions in British Columbia. She participated to the creation of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives in British Columbia. She has been involved for several years on the executive board of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, as Vice President (1979-1980, 2985-1987, 1988-1989), treasurer (1977-79), Employment and Economy Committee Chair (1985-89), spokesperson Pro-Canada Network (1987-1990), co-chair Coalition Against Free Trade (1985-89) and editor Status of Women News (1977-1981).

Marjorie Griffin Cohen est actuellement professeure à l'université Simon Fraser en Colombie-Britannique. Elle a obtenu sa licence à l'université de l'Iowa Wesleyan, sa maîtrise à l'université de New York et son doctorat à l'université de York. Elle est spécialisée dans les domaines de l'économie politique et des politiques publiques. Elle travaille plus particulièrement sur des questions concernant l'économie canadienne, les femmes, le travail, la déréglementation de l'électricité, l'énergie et l'environnement, et les accords commerciaux internationaux. Elle a été directrice et a siégé dans plusieurs conseils et commissions en Colombie-Britannique. Elle a participé à la création du Centre canadien de politiques alternatives en Colombie-Britannique. Elle a participé pendant plusieurs années au conseil exécutif du Comité national d'action sur le statut des femmes, en tant que vice-présidente (1979-1980, 2985-1987, 1988-1989), trésorière (1977-1979), présidente du comité sur l'emploi et l'économie (1985-1989), porte-parole du réseau Pro-Canada (1987-1990), coprésidente de la Coalition contre le libre-échange (1985-1989) et rédactrice en chef de Status of Women News (1977-1981).

Scope and content

This fonds consists of records related to the Ontario Committee on the Status of Women when Marjorie Cohen was involved in the National Action Committee in the 1970s. It contains also records related to her activities as professor at York University. This fonds also includes files relating to events in which she participated and actions for which she was involved during the 1970s and 1980s, including the Toronto Working Skills Centre's evaluation at the end 1970s.
