Women's Lib. Movement in Canada : History

This file contains documents related to early development of the women's liberation movement in Canada, including the organization of local women's study groups, The Women's Place, The Toronto Women's Lib. Movement, the Vancouver Women's Caucus, and the Leila Khaled Collective. Some of these documents feature explanatory notes by Frances Gregory. The file also contains an issue of the Vancouver Women's Caucus newspaper, Pedestal.

This series contains general information about the history of the women's liberation movement in Canada, specifically focused on groups that were active in Toronto from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s. The series also contains a paper by France Gregory on the welfare movement in Toronto.

This is a sound recording of the program, 'From a Different Perspective', a radio programme about the third world by Development Education Centre, Toronto; it was hosted by Peter Davies. Frances Gregory speaks about her work with INTERCEDE, the International Coalition to End Domestic Exploitation [01:17-10:32; 15:35-16:00]. Topics discussed include the lack of rights afforded to domestic workers in Canada ; INTERCEDE's victories in Ontario ; specific working conditions for domestic workers ; and their interactions with Canadian Immigration Services. Gregory's interview is followed by another interview with Joyce Fraser, author of Cry of the Illegal Immigrant [10:47-15:35]. Fraser explains the situation for domestic workers living in Canada illegally, and advises against becoming a domestic in order to immigrate to Canada. The remainder of the recording includes a number of short international news items by host, Peter Davies, Alan Ross Gibson, and Jill [Consella?]. These include: information about the Canadian multi-national corporations, Barter and Inco, causing unrest in Indonesia ; information about the United States of America's Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) ; an update about breast-milk substitutes, including the results of a study in Brazil ; news of labour relations in South Africa and the regulations of unions ; and finally, the murder of Walter Rodney and protests in Ghana [16:00-28:05].

This is a sound recording of an interview conducted by Frances Gregory, completed in the course of her work with INTERCEDE, the International Coalition to End Domestics Exploitation. The interviewees are Mavis Scarlett and Violet Williams, workers from Kingston, Jamaica. Topics discussed include domestic work, office work, teaching, and other work opportunities and work conditions in Jamaica ; reasons for immigrating and motivations to come to Canada for work ; families and cost of schooling in Jamaica ; issues with trying to organize for domestic worker's rights in Canada, including the exploitation of immigrant workers, restrictions on family joining workers and other issues, including housing and cost of living ; INTERCEDE's efforts organizing for domestic workers' rights ; and more. [Side A features background noise that makes the interviewees difficult to hear at times; there is a pause between sides A and B (00:32:40 to 00:32:46). At the end of this recording is a small snippet containing a test and introduction to this interview, which was erroneously captured at the time of the interview before the tape was turned back to A side for the interview proper (1:07:55-1:08:50)].
