Scope and content
This is a sound recording of an interview conducted by Frances Gregory, completed in the course of her work with INTERCEDE, the International Coalition to End Domestics Exploitation. The interviewees are Mavis Scarlett and Violet Williams, workers from Kingston, Jamaica. Topics discussed include domestic work, office work, teaching, and other work opportunities and work conditions in Jamaica ; reasons for immigrating and motivations to come to Canada for work ; families and cost of schooling in Jamaica ; issues with trying to organize for domestic worker's rights in Canada, including the exploitation of immigrant workers, restrictions on family joining workers and other issues, including housing and cost of living ; INTERCEDE's efforts organizing for domestic workers' rights ; and more. [Side A features background noise that makes the interviewees difficult to hear at times; there is a pause between sides A and B (00:32:40 to 00:32:46). At the end of this recording is a small snippet containing a test and introduction to this interview, which was erroneously captured at the time of the interview before the tape was turned back to A side for the interview proper (1:07:55-1:08:50)].
