This file contains drafts of chapter 5 from Deam of Nation, including two manuscript versions, annotated and with additional notes. A note in the file from 10 April 2017 by Susan Mann states: "Pattern here is unusual: two handwritten drafts and no sign of the typewritten one. I must have really fussed over the initial, handwritten draft - so much of it is altered in the second handwritten draft. I note too that some of the details I had grad. student Mark Enturistle verift for me didn't find thier way into second draft... somewhere in this process I developed a rule of thumb for writing (+ revising): When in doubt leave out - useful for phrasing as well as for facts."
