Susan Nancy Mann, C.M., Ph.D., F.R.S.C., LLD. describes herself as a feminist by birth, an historian by training, a writer by avocation, a teacher for the love of it, and an administrator for fun.
Mann was born in 1941 in Ottawa, Canada, to two high school teachers of English: Walter Beresford Mann (1910-1995) and Marjorie Mann, née Diehl (1909-1993). Her sister, Gretchen Mann Brewin (b. 23 December 1938) was a politician in British Columbia. Mann was married twice, and occasionally used both her maiden and married names: Robertson and Trofimenkoff, during her work. She had one daughter in 1962.
Educated in Canada, Scotland and Switzerland, Susan Mann received her B.A. (honours) in Modern History from the University of Toronto in 1963, her master’s in 1965 from the University of Western Ontario, and her doctorate in 1970 from Université Laval in Québec. She spent a year teaching English in Tokyo, Japan, 1963-1964. Her first university appointment was at the Université de Montréal, where she taught English-Canadian History in French, 1966-1970 and then at the University of Calgary, where she taught French-Canadian History in English, 1970-1972. The University of Ottawa offered her the opportunity to teach in both languages and she remained there as Assistant, Associate and later full Professor in the History Department, 1972-1992.
While in Ottawa, she assessed projects for the SSHRCC and was the Academic Editor for Social Sciences in Canada, 1974-1976. She chaired the Aid to Scholarly Publications Committee of the Social Science Federation of Canada [now the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada], 1976-79. Mann was a founding member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) in 1976 and of Senior Women's Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC) in 1987. She participated in annual meetings of the Canadian Historical Association, of which she was president 1984-5. She chaired the Status of Women Committee of the Council of Ontario Universities, 1985-88.
At the University of Ottawa, Mann chaired the Department of History, 1977-1980 and was appointed Vice-Rector Academic, 1984-90. She was also a member of the university's Senate, Board of Governors, Arts Faculty Council, School of Graduate Studies, and APUO. Notably, she was a co-organizer of the University of Ottawa’s Women’s Studies program, founded in 1982 by a group of cross-disciplinary feminist scholars including Caroline Andrew, Ann Denis and Marie-Laure Girou-Swiderski.
Dr. Susan Mann was the first woman to be appointed as President of York University, 1992-1997.
Visiting professorships brought her back to Montréal and Ottawa: McGill’s Centre for Research and Teaching on Women, 1997-2002, and the Institute of Women's Studies at the University of Ottawa, 2000. In 2002, she chaired the university's Task Force on Inter-disciplinarity/Groupe de travail sur l'interdiscplinarité.
Throughout her career, Mann taught various courses in history, including Post-Confederation Canada, Quebec, French-Canadian Nationalism, Canadian Social History, Canadian Women’s History, Women and the First World War, Femmes, Nation et Nationalisme. She also directed several MA and PhD theses and is the author and editor of several publications in Canadian history, Quebec, women, and military history. In recognition of her work and services to academic institutions, she has been the recipient of several awards and honours, among them the Royal Society of Canada and the Order of Canada.
In retirement in Montreal, Mann has continued to pursue research and writing, as well as exploring her artistic interests, particularly via sculpture.

Retraitée à Montréal, Mann poursuit ses travaux de recherche et d'écriture, tout en explorant ses intérêts artistiques, notamment par le biais de la sculpture.
