The origins of the Women In Trades organization came out of a September 1979 meeting where women from several government agencies and educational groups met to come up with a strategy to help women already working in trades or as a starting point for women interested in entering non-traditional occupations. It was evident to the women at this meeting that there were problems with women in trade feeling isolated and not having a support group to discuss issues with. In spring 1980, a working committee was planning the founding meeting of Women In Trades association. This was held in June 1980.
Founding members of the group are Nancy Bayly and Jenny Stimac. There were always a small group but were committed to the cause. Mary Addison served as co-ordinator of the organization throughout the 1980s. Women In Trade helped women from both an educational and political perspective to make sure they received the guidance they needed. They were able to direct women to different training programs and also encourage them to act politically. There were workshops on how to lobby the government and speaking out publicly and also to attend rallies.
The central focus of the organization was to promote women in trade performing non-traditional work. This was an ongoing process. It involved convincing federal and provincial decision makers and labour unionists of the viability of women working in trades. They had to continually work at strengthening the relationship between tradeswomen, unions and employers. The membership of the group had a broad base. Women In Trade was open to women from different racial and ethnic backgrounds and also disabled tradeswomen. To be eligible for membership a women had to: work with her hands, belong to a particular skilled trade and paid hourly doing work with machines. Funding was always a challenge for this organization and they had to be constantly looking for sources of money. They looked to several different Ontario programs for assistance.

L'organisation Women In Trades est née d'une réunion en septembre 1979 où des femmes de plusieurs agences gouvernementales et groupes éducatifs se sont réunies pour élaborer une stratégie visant à aider les femmes travaillant déjà dans les métiers ou à servir de point de départ aux femmes intéressées par des professions non traditionnelles. Les participantes à cette réunion ont constaté que les femmes exerçant un métier se sentaient isolées et ne disposaient pas d'un groupe de soutien pour discuter de leurs problèmes. Au printemps 1980, un comité de travail a planifié la réunion de fondation de l'association Women In Trades. Celle-ci s'est tenue en juin 1980.
Les membres fondateurs du groupe sont Nancy Bayly et Jenny Stimac. Il s'agit toujours d'un petit groupe, mais il est dévoué à la cause. Mary Addison a assuré la coordination de l'organisation tout au long des années 1980. Women In Trade a aidé les femmes d'un point de vue éducatif et politique pour s'assurer qu'elles recevaient les conseils dont elles avaient besoin. Elles ont pu orienter les femmes vers différents programmes de formation et les encourager à agir sur le plan politique. Des ateliers ont été organisés sur la manière de faire pression sur le gouvernement, de s'exprimer publiquement et de participer à des rassemblements.
L'objectif principal de l'organisation était de promouvoir le travail non traditionnel des femmes dans le secteur du commerce. Il s'agit d'un processus continu. Il s'agissait de convaincre les décideurs fédéraux et provinciaux ainsi que les syndicalistes de la viabilité des femmes exerçant un métier. Les membres du groupe doivent continuellement s'efforcer de renforcer les relations entre les femmes de métier, les syndicats et les employeurs. Les membres du groupe étaient très diversifiés. Women In Trade était ouvert aux femmes de différentes origines raciales et ethniques, ainsi qu'aux femmes de métier handicapées. Pour pouvoir devenir membre, une femme devait : travailler avec ses mains, appartenir à un métier spécialisé particulier et être payée à l'heure pour travailler avec des machines. Le financement a toujours été un défi pour cette organisation qui devait constamment chercher des sources de financement. Elle s'est tournée vers plusieurs programmes ontariens pour obtenir de l'aide.
