This is an interview with Dr. Veronica Dahl, an Argentine Canadian computer-scientist who has been recognized as one of the 15 founders of the field of logic programming. The only woman to receive this title, Dr. Dahl achieved this milestone in 1997, after 20 years of foundational research following her doctorate, when she developed the first logic programming database system alongside a front end to consult it in human language. Dr. Dahl is also an emeritus Professor at Simon Fraser University, and her current research focuses on solidarity as opposed to domination-promoting uses of Artificial Intelligence and explores how AI might be used to combat growing ecological and social crises. In fact, Dahl’s work has been used to help monitor current ecological crises such as sudden Oak tree death in California, and biodiversity in Hawaiian coral reefs.
