History

The Women's Place was established in Toronto in 1972 at 31 Dupont Street. It was started by "a group of women who felt there were many women concerned about their liberation, but isolated from one another." It was felt that if these women could be put in contact with one another this would increase the power base women [were trying to build] for themselves. (Taken from the document "Who we are, Where we are, How we got here."
The intention was that the Women's Place would act in a coordinating function and provide a space for women for whatever their needs. They ran several workshops and programs, including a library and bookstore, a lesbian drop-in, liberation workshop, etc. as well as participating in speaking engagement and other activities.
