Scope and content

This sub-series concerns documents related to Monique Frize's activities as the first holder of the first National Chair of Women in Engineering (Northern Telecom-NSERC Women in Engineering) at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton. In May 1989, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Professor Frank Wilson, asked Northern Telecom and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), two of Canada's largest funding agencies, to establish a Chair on Women Engineers at the University of New Brunswick. Monique Frize was appointed as an incumbent on December 1, 1989. As a Chairholder, Monique Frize's mandate was to devote half of her time to university functions (research, teaching and supervision of graduate students) and the other half to activities related to the Chair aimed at increasing the participation of women in the field of engineering from training to professional careers. As a model for young female engineering students, Monique Frize has developed programs to recruit and retain women in engineering. She met with students and parent groups across the country. This sub-series includes reports and documents related to the organization of the flesh. It also contains documents relating to articles written by Monique Frize, as well as speeches, conferences, workshops and school visits she has made during her tenure.
