Fonds 10-062 - Service Office Retail Workers Union of Canada (SORWUC) Local 7

The SORWUC began in 1971 with the Working Women’s Association of Vancouver and involved mainly unorganized women themselves. The group was also involved with public education about day care, job security, and equal pay. The union became formally organized and born from the Working Women’s Association of Vancouver in 1972 by a founding convention of 24 women, having the intention of creating SORWUC to represent organized occupations that were not yet included in the traditional trade unions at that time in Canada. The union aimed to overcome adversities faced by working women within these occupations by negotiating and bargaining for what they aimed to publicly educate their members on such as improve working conditions and provide job security. The union was able to branch out in three years’ time to include bank workers, and individuals from the finance industry. Having a presence primarily in British Columbia where the headquarters was located, SORWUC had a national presence in Canada due to Local sections of sisters and members in various cities. Local 7 was chartered in June 1982 for the region of Ontario and was based in Ottawa. After a decade of organized events and national presence, SORWUC ended operations in 1986.

Le SORWUC a vu le jour en 1971 avec la Working Women's Association of Vancouver et regroupait principalement des femmes non syndiquées. Le groupe était également impliqué dans l'éducation du public sur les garderies, la sécurité de l'emploi et l'égalité des salaires. Le syndicat s'est formellement organisé et est né de la Working Women's Association of Vancouver en 1972, à l'occasion d'un congrès fondateur de 24 femmes, dans l'intention de créer SORWUC pour représenter les professions organisées qui n'étaient pas encore incluses dans les syndicats traditionnels de l'époque au Canada. Le syndicat avait pour objectif de surmonter les difficultés rencontrées par les travailleuses au sein de ces professions en négociant et en défendant ce sur quoi il entendait informer publiquement ses membres, à savoir l'amélioration des conditions de travail et la sécurité de l'emploi. En l'espace de trois ans, le syndicat a été en mesure d'élargir son champ d'action aux employés de banque et aux personnes travaillant dans l'industrie financière. Présente principalement en Colombie-Britannique, où se trouve le siège social, SORWUC a une présence nationale au Canada grâce aux sections locales de consœurs et de membres dans diverses villes. La section locale 7 a été créée en juin 1982 pour la région de l'Ontario et était basée à Ottawa. Après une décennie d'événements organisés et de présence nationale, SORWUC a mis fin à ses activités en 1986.
