This is an interview with Maydianne Andrade, a biology professor at the University of Toronto and co-founding President of the Canadian Black Scientists Network, which focuses on dismantling the challenges, discrimination, and barriers to inclusion in STEM that are experienced by Black Canadians. Dr. Andrade’s research explores how the reproductive behaviors of males and females evolve through the interaction of sexual and natural selection in different ecological contexts. Her best-known work is about the mating habits of Australian redback spiders. More specifically, Andrade studies evolutionary reasons for spiders’ sexual cannibalism and male self-sacrifice. The interviewer is Meghan Tibbits-Lamirande.
