Silent Film Music Collection

The bulk of the collection is comprised of sheet music for mostly piano or orchestra, published between 1883 and 1946 (approximately a third of which was published in the 1920s) for the purposes of performance during the screening of silent films. Handwritten notes and cues, as well as stamps are found on many sheets, which have been identified. Some of the items are of collections of music specifically written and published for the purpose of motion pictures. Also included are cue sheets and instruction manuals, folders with advertisements, letters from editors, as well as a program for the 2014 screening of “The Cat and the Canary” with small orchestra at the University of Ottawa School of Music, sums up the Silent Film Music collection.

Oh! Boy, what a Girl

This item contains 3-page sheet music for piano with lyrics and cover page. The handwritten inscriptions "T. From that day" and "16" were added in blue pencil. Series number: O. 332.

Baby Face

This item contains 1- to 3-page sheet music for piano conductor with lyrics and 1st violin with lyrics, publisher number: F. & D. Ltd. 17687. The handwritten inscriptions "A [lady calling]", faded number [illegible] were added in blue pencil on the piano part; and "(When butler opens door)", "Time OUT", "31 & 50" in blue pencil and "32 as 20 (when Blytheway calls Denny)" in red pencil were added on 1st violin part. Series number: 2336.

This item contains a folder with advertisements and 1- to 2-page sheet music for orchestra parts: piano, 1st violin, 2nd violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, 1st clarinet in B flat, cornets in B flat, trombone, tympani in G and D. The handwritten inscription "[lime] brings st elmo" was added in pencil on the 1st violin part. The stamp "A. E. WITHAM VIOLONIST TORONTO" in black ink was added to sheets. Berg's Incidental Series.

This item contains a folder with advertisements and 1- to 3-page sheet music for orchestra parts: piano, 1st violin, 2nd violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, 1st clarinet in A, 1st and 2nd cornet, trombone, bass drum E and B. The handwritten inscription "A cor" was added in pencil on the 1st and 2nd cornet sheet and "Write one more and die" was added on the trombone part. The stamp "A. E. WITHAM VIOLONIST TORONTO" in black ink was added to sheets. Berg's Incidental Series.
