Susan Scott is an activist and author who has raised awareness of homelessness in Canada, specifically examining issues through a gendered lens. Scott was born in Oxford, England. Between high school and university she volunteered for a live-in position at Church House, a shelter for women sex workers in London’s East End. After graduating from Oxford University, Scott moved to Canada where she married and had a child.

Scott’s career in journalism started with her work for newspapers such as the “Calgary Herald.” Based on her articles on poverty and homelessness, The Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Society asked Scott to write a book that would humanize homelessness. In 2000, her work, “No Fixed Address” was published.

Shortly after, Scott devoted herself to freelance work, also volunteering for social services agencies. Scott was then awarded a grant and travelled across the country, interviewing women in shelters and centres. She wrote about these experiences in her published work, “All Our Sisters: Stories of Homeless Women in Canada.” Scott then presented at numerous events examining issues of houselessness in Canada. In 2011 and 2014, Scott, with other related agencies, organized Canada’s first national conference on homelessness and women.

The Recovered Memory Task Group (RMTG) was formed in Ottawa in July 1993 as a working group of the Sexual Assault Network, itself a committee of the Ottawa-based Regional Coordinating Committee to End Violence Against Women (RCCEVAW). The RMTG contained several committees, including the Legal Issues Committee and the Public Education Sub-Committee. The group authored papers relating to childhood trauma and organized the conference: “Surviving in a Climate of Disbelief; Recovered Memories, Therapy and the Law,” in 1995.

The RMTG was formed to counter backlash against women survivors of sexual abuse, specifically against those purporting the “False Memory Syndrome.” “FMS” supporters held that many women who testified to their experiences of childhood sexual assault had invented, or false, memories due to their suggestibility towards therapists and the therapy process. The “FMS” Foundation, consisting mostly of family members accused of sexual assault formed in support of this medically unrecognized theory.

The RMTG worked to counter support for “FMS” theory. Its members included women survivors of trauma, counsellors, lawyers and behavioural scientists. The group provided support, information, referrals and resources to women survivors of trauma as well as their allies and related professionals. The RMTG also facilitated public education and research about childhood experiences of trauma. The group developed a package of legal arguments to counter “FMS” theory as a court defence strategy and identified expert witnesses to testify on behalf of survivors. Members of the RMTG as well as women from the general public could consult RMTG resources at Women’s Place, Ottawa. The Recovered Memory Task Group disbanded in 1997.

Greta Hofmann Nemiroff is a writer, educator, and coordinator of Women’s Studies programs. She was born in 1937 in Montreal. Her parents emigrated from Vienna, Austria to Canada in 1930. She obtained her B.A. in English Literature in 1958 from McGill University, and an M.A. in English Literature from Boston University in 1961.

In 1970/1971, Greta and Christine Allen Garside (later Sister Prudence Allen) taught the first university level Women’s Studies course offered in Canada, “The Nature of Woman” at Sir George Williams University in the Philosophy Department. Between 1970 and 1973 she was a member of the founding group that established Vanier college, taught English and Humanities at Vanier College and served as the Chair of the English and Creative Arts Departments. She began teaching English and Humanities at the New School at Dawson College in 1973, and served intermittently as the New School Coordinator, 1975-1991. Greta was a founding member of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University, where she was also a tutor, President of the Assembly in 1978-1979, and an editor of the first Simone de Beauvoir Institute Bulletin in 1979.

In 1990, Greta obtained an M.A. with great distinction in Philosophy of Education, from McGill University. Between 1991 and 1996, she was the federally appointed joint chair of Women’s Studies programs at Ottawa University and Carleton University. She returned to teaching at Dawson College in 1996 and was appointed the Coordinator of Creative Arts, Language and Literature, 1999-2013, as well as the Coordinator of Women’s Studies, 1996-2015.

Throughout her career, Greta was involved with several committees, organizations, as well as grant projects relating to education and feminism, including but not limited to: Board member for Québec, project manager at the Canadian Congress for Learning Opportunities for Women (CCLOW); president-elect at the Canadian Women Studies Association (CWSA), 1991-1992; and, when its headquarters moved to Montreal between 1999 and 2004, president of the Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI), an international non-governmental organization with which she had been involved as member, treasurer and secretary since its inception in 1986. In recognition of her contributions to research on women, she was awarded Honourary Life Membership at the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) in 1996.

She retired in June 2015.

Greta is the author of numerous non-fiction and fiction works, editor of several publications, and a regular contributor to several periodicals.

Joan Diane Margaret Gullen was a grassroots community activist who helped establish numerous Ottawa-area social services targeted to helping children and women survivors of gender-based violence, as well as individuals from disadvantaged socio-economic communities.

Gullen, (née Hanley), was born in Brampton, Ontario and experienced extreme poverty, while being raised in a single-parent home during the Great Depression. Gullen went on to obtain a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Toronto before earning a Masters of Social Work from Carleton University. In 1954, Joan married Malcolm Gullen, and the couple subsequently had five children.

During her decades-long career as a social worker, Gullen spearheaded numerous initiatives that changed the landscape of social services programs for Ottawa-Carleton, Ontario. She helped found Ottawa’s Interval House, in 1976, and established the Regional Co-ordinating Committee to End Violence Against Women, (now the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women). She also helped establish the Ottawa Snowsuit Fund, which distributes tens of thousands of snowsuits, annually, to local children in need.
Gullen helped establish Immigrant Women Services Ottawa (IWSO) and the Gloucester Centre for Community Resources, (now the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre), also helping create affordable housing through her work with the Gloucester Housing Corporation. She served on numerous boards and committees, including the Good Beginnings Committee and organizations dedicated to improving childcare services and services to young and/or single mothers.

In recognition of her social justice work, Gullen was awarded the Governor General of Canada’s Meritorious Service Decoration Medal, in 1999. Several awards were created in her honour, including awards presented by the Family Services of Ottawa and The Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Maureen Jessop Orton was a social work researcher specializing in sexual health policy who worked on research projects that examined the impact of sexual health policy in Ontario. Orton attended the University of Toronto, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1950, and then completed a Bachelor of Social Work in 1955. In the 1950s, she worked for the Canadian Red Cross and the Children's Aid Society of Hamilton-Wentworth. From 1957 to 1971, she raised two children and participated in community NGOs, and also did playwriting.

In 1971 she returned to research, working at McMaster University under social work professor Cyril Greenland on a study of child abuse in Ontario. Starting in 1972, she worked for the Canadian Association of Social Work on the Symposium on Sexuality & Fertility. During this time, Orton began a Master of Arts degree specializing in Social Welfare Policy at McMaster University, which she completed in 1974. That same year, she started the Multidisciplinary Extension Program in Sexuality & Fertility at McMaster, a post-professional education program for social workers, educators and medical professionals to enable them to provide sexual health education programs through their work. The program ended in 1976, after which she became a part-time lecturer and researcher at the McMaster School of Social Work.

In 1979, Orton started a major research project with Ellen Rosenblatt on teenage pregnancy in Ontario, sponsored by Planned Parenthood Ontario and hosted by McMaster University. The goal of the project was to examine the impact that access to sexual health education programs had on rates of teenage pregnancy. The project produced reports in 1981 and 1986 before formally separating from Planned Parenthood and moving to the University of Toronto in 1989. The third and fourth reports were subsequently published in 1991 and 1993, and the project ended in 1994 after 15 years.

During this period, Orton made many presentations on the project's findings to the Ontario government and professional conferences. In 1984, she served as an expert witness for the defence in the pivotal Morgentaler, Scott & Smoling abortion trial. In 1982, she also served as an expert witness for the plaintiffs at the Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador v. Fedorik & Right-To-Life Newfoundland and Labrador libel trial in St. John's.

In 1981, Orton became an Associate Professor of Social Work at McMaster, before leaving in 1983 to pursue her Ph.D. From 1983 to 1991, Orton completed her Ph.D at the University of Toronto, which compared the impacts of sexual health policy and social change in Alberta and Ontario. In 1993, she became an Associate Research Affiliate at the Faculty of Social Work of the University of Toronto, a role she held for five years before retiring in 1998.

In 1999, following major changes to the public health system in Ontario under the Harris government that downloaded full responsibility for the funding and provision of public health services onto municipalities, the Sexual Health Network of Ontario commissioned Orton and two other researchers, City of Toronto public health researcher Deborah Hardwick and University of Toronto social work researcher Emmanuel Koku, to produce a report on the impacts of these changes on sexual health services in the province. The report was published in 2001.

The Women’s Future Fund (WFF) was the first women’s fundraising federation in Canada. The organization traces its origins to 1991 when 18 women’s groups met to discuss alternative and sustainable funding for women’s groups: the conference was titled, “Enlarging the Pie.” Conference attendees formed a planning committee and commissioned a study on collaborative fundraising, “The Report of the National Project on Sharing Resources,” and in 1996 the Women’s Future Fund was formed as a creative and collaborative fundraising initiative.

The WFF’s nine founding members included the Canadian Women’s Foundation, NAC Trust, the National Association of Women and the Law, and Women in Trades and Technology.

The WFF launched publicly in 1999 and targeted workplace giving as its fundraising method, asking employees to contribute to the federation through payroll deductions or cash donations. By 2006, approximately 30 workplaces participated in the WFF workplace giving program.

The Women’s Future Fund consisted of a board of directors and members council. The WFF also staffed an executive director, campaign director and executive assistant.
In 2006, like many other national women’s organizations, WFF lost its grant funding and operations ceased in 2008.

Le Women's Future Fund (WFF) a été la première fédération de collecte de fonds pour les femmes au Canada. Ann B. Denis était sociologue et professeur à l'Université d'Ottawa. Denis a obtenu son baccalauréat en sociologie à l'Université Carleton avant de s'inscrire à l'Université de Londres, où elle a obtenu une maîtrise et un doctorat, également en sociologie.

Denis a enseigné à l'Université Bishop's et à l'Université Western Ontario avant de devenir membre du département de sociologie de l'Université d'Ottawa en 1973. Ann B. Denis was a sociologist and professor at the University of Ottawa. She was a prominent researcher in the area of power relations within societies, particularly in regard to gender, race, class, education and the internet. Denis completed a Bachelor's in sociology at Carleton University before attending the University of London, where she completed a Master's and Ph.D, also in sociology.

Denis taught at Bishop's University and the University of Western Ontario before becoming a member of the Department of Sociology at the University of Ottawa in 1973. While at the University of Ottawa, she was appointed director of the Department on multiple occasions. She was also a prominent member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW), where she served as president and as a member on the organization's United Nations Committee. Denis retired from teaching in 2009, but continued to be involved with the University of Ottawa and CRIAW until her death in 2019. Upon retirement, she was named professor emerita of the University of Ottawa.

Constance Backhouse is a Distinguished Professor, University Research Chair in the Faculty of Law, and Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre at the University of Ottawa. She graduated from York University, Osgoode Hall Law School, and Harvard University before teaching at the University of Western Ontario. At Western University, Backhouse and several female colleagues helped set up a Caucus on Women's Issues in an attempt to implement affirmative action initiatives. Along with several faculty colleagues, Backhouse published what was known as the, "Chilly Climate Report," which led to a book-length work and the widely distributed video, “The Chilly Climate for Women in Colleges and Universities.”

In 2000, Constance Backhouse began teaching at the University of Ottawa where her research and teaching specialize in Canadian legal history as well as sex and race discrimination in law. Constance Backhouse’s numerous monograph-length published works are written in an accessible narrative and are focused on discrimination and the legal history of gender and race in Canada. Several of these works have received literary prizes, including “Petticoats and Prejudice: Women and Law in Nineteenth-Century Canada,” and “Colour-Coded: A Legal History of Racism in Canada, 1900-1950.”

Throughout her career, Constance Backhouse has received awards and honours such as the Killam Prize in Social Sciences, the David W. Mundell Medal and the Social Science & Humanities Research Council of Canada Gold Medal, the Order of Ontario, the Order of Canada, the Governor General of Canada Person’s Medal, the Molson Prize in Social Sciences and the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Gold Key for Achievement.
