History

In 2000, several members of Second Story Feminist Press branched off to create their own publishing organization, Sumach Press. Publishing rights for select titles were also transferred to the new company, which was owned and operated by Beth McAuley, Lois Pike, and Liz Martin, in Toronto, Ontario.

Sumach Press was integral to Canada’s small feminist press scene, publishing a wide array of works written by and about women and that reached both national and international readerships. Titles explored diverse subjects such as health, history, politics, and sexuality. Sumach Press’ works encompassed literary fiction, mystery novels, cookbooks, and scholarly publications.

Its Women’s Issues Publishing Program featured feminist titles that promoted a more humane and equitable society, exploring issues of race, gender, and class. Sumach Press’ literacy fiction works reached both adult and young adult readers. In 2009, Sumach Press was acquired by Canadian Scholars' Press Inc. /Women’s Press.
