Scope and content

This file contains documents and correspondence related to a Secretary of State-funded conference by the R.E.A.L. Women of Canada (Realistic, equal, Active for Life), an organization with strong roots in the pro-life movement. The file includes an announcement from the Ottawa International Women's Day Collective requesting that women's groups write to their members of Parliament to oppose this funding. The file also includes documents and correspondence between Status of Women and R.E.A.L., which acknowledge the latter's conservative political positions on women's bodily autonomy, homosexual rights, and pornography, among other issues. While MAW similarly fought for the recognition of homemakers, a letter penned by Maureen Kellerman demonstrates that they sought to distance themselves from R.E.A.L. and to express opposing political values.
