Biographical history

Pat Petrala was a prominent feminist activist in Ottawa during the 1980s and 1990s. Petrala was involved with numerous women's lobby organizations, and helped found the Ottawa Women's Network with Sarah Cloutier in the Spring of 1980. The OWN sought to help women learn how to run meetings, take minutes, speak in public, and keep them informed on a variety of gender related issues. Primarily, OWN saw itself combating women's isolation, exchanging information, and teaching new skills. The diversity of material in Petrala's fonds reflects the OWN's mandate to connect women with one another and with various women's support organizations. Petrala also helped to organize the Ottawa Women's Credit Union, served as president of the board for Ottawa-Carleton Women's Place, and used her talents as an illustrator to support other women's organizations such as the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. Finally, Petrala was a key organizer behind the development of a Women's Monument in Ottawa's Minto Park, and a monument to victims of the Ecole Polytechnique Massacre in Vancouver, BC.
