This is an interview with Dr. Karen Messing, an emeritus professor of biological sciences at the University of Quebec at Montreal. Dr. Messing is a geneticist and ergonomist specializing in women’s occupational health. In fact, Messing co-authored the World Health Organization’s first guidance document on the topic of “Gender and Occupational Health.” Dr. Messing has also authored several books on the topic, including One-Eyed Science: Occupational Health and Women Workers (1998); Pain and Prejudice: What Science Can Learn About Work from the People Who Do It (2014); and Bent Out of Shape: Shame, Solidarity, and Women’s Bodies at Work (2021). She is a recipient of the Jacques Rousseau Award, The Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons’ Case, and an office of the Order of Canada.
