Gay Bell fonds

This fonds contains records related to Gay Bell's involvement with the early lesbian movement in Toronto, prisoners' rights activism, labour activism, and women's liberation. Including brochures, pamphlets, flyers, correspondence, buttons, and photographs related to the local instantiation of these movements in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bell collected alternative publications and periodicals that detail their wider historical context. The fonds also contains scripts, rough notes, photographs, and newspaper articles related to Bell's theatrical performances, which were often innovative and sometimes controversial. When Bell donated these records in 2011, she included explanatory notes that provide detail and context for local events and initiative which have been lost to history. This fonds is thus invaluable for studying the early lesbian movement, queer involvement in labour organizing, prison activism, and the expanding purview of women's liberation in the last decades of the 20th century.

Leah Erna Beck fonds

Leah Erna Beck [née Rosenbaum] was born in the former Yugoslavia before escaping to Canada at the outbreak of World War II, in 1939. Leah Erna Beck’s father ran the toy manufacturing company, Pax Manufacturing, in Toronto, Ontario. At seventeen, Leah Erna Beck married Alec Englander and had her first child at nineteen. She earned her bachelors of arts at Ithaca College, New York, before returning to Toronto so that her husband could run the family business.

Beck studied art at the New School of Art and the Ontario College of Art and her media included sculpture, serigraphy, drawing and painting. She adopted her mother’s name, Erna, as a middle name, after separating from her husband in 1973. Leah Erna Beck became a feminist organizer, working at Women’s Place in Toronto and helping found Times Change, Women’s Employment Service, in 1974. She was motivated by her experiences of frustrations and women’s limited opportunities, hosting consciousness raising sessions at community venues. Along with her feminist organizing work, Beck was a founding collective member of WATER: Women Artists Together and her sculptures, stained glass work and art performances were featured in festivals and venues. Her daughter, Karen Englander received publicity as a young teenage feminist and her daughter, Anrénee, wrote the best-selling work, “Dear Diary, I’m Pregnant.” Leah Erna Beck was featured for her feminist activist work in the long-standing Canadian magazine, “Saturday Night” and she was published in “Velvet Fist.”

Le père de Leah Erna Beck dirige l'entreprise de fabrication de jouets Pax Manufacturing à Toronto, dans l'Ontario. This fonds consists of Wendy McPeake's personal files. It is composed mainly of textual records from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. It contains files related to her involvement in various groups and organizations such as the Ottawa Women’s Centre, the Political Action Collective, the Feminist Action Collective, the Local 7/SORWUC, and the Public Service Alliance of Canada Women’s Committee. It includes materials related to feminist publishers from Canada and the United States, collected by Wendy McPeake when she was arts coordinator for Upstream magazine. The fonds also contains various subject files that reflect Wendy McPeake’s interests during this period. This fonds consists of administrative and organizational documents, correspondence, galley proofs, financial records, original manuscripts and galley proofs, flyers, handbills, pamphlets, postcards, subscriber lists and information, planning documents from the Canadian Feminist Periodicals Conference 1986, two computer diskettes, and one metal telephone index pad. There are also separate files from several individual employees which include correspondence and items relating to their particular role in the collective.

These records offer significant information about feminist journalism in Canada, and about activities in the women’s movement, particularly in Toronto, during the 1980s.

Rhoda Rosenfeld fonds

The fonds consists of photographs taken by Rosenfeld of the 1970 abortion rights march organized by the Vancouver Women's Caucus. The march marked the beginning of a campaign that would later travel across Canada as the Abortion Caravan, ending in a large protest in Ottawa. Rosenfeld became interested in the Vancouver Women’s Caucus through her friend Ellen Woodsworth. The march started on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, went through downtown Vancouver, and ended in front of the Hudson’s Bay Company with "brilliant performance of the street theatre in which several of [her] friends were involved."

Le fonds comprend des photographies prises par Rosenfeld de la marche pour le droit à l'avortement organisée en 1970 par le Vancouver Women's Caucus. Cette manifestation a marqué le début d'une campagne qui a ensuite traversé le Canada sous le nom de Caravane de l'avortement. Elle s'est terminée par une grande manifestation à Ottawa. Rosenfeld s'est intéressée au Vancouver Women's Caucus par l'intermédiaire de son amie Ellen Woodsworth.
