Silent Film Music Collection

The bulk of the collection is comprised of sheet music for mostly piano or orchestra, published between 1883 and 1946 (approximately a third of which was published in the 1920s) for the purposes of performance during the screening of silent films. Handwritten notes and cues, as well as stamps are found on many sheets, which have been identified. Some of the items are of collections of music specifically written and published for the purpose of motion pictures. Also included are cue sheets and instruction manuals, folders with advertisements, letters from editors, as well as a program for the 2014 screening of “The Cat and the Canary” with small orchestra at the University of Ottawa School of Music, sums up the Silent Film Music collection.

The Susan Schellenberg and Rosemary Barnes fonds documents the collaboration between the two women, particularly in their joint reflections on the contributions and limitations of conventional mental health care and their joint search for alternatives such as art therapy. Susan Schellenberg and Rosemary Barnes first met in 1990, when they were both active in the struggle of Women's College Hospital against merger with Toronto General Hospital. They co-authored the book "Committed to the Sane Asylum: Narratives on Mental Wellness and Healing". The fonds documents the various reflections, presentations and articles that emerged from this collaboration. The fonds also documents Susan Schellenberg's artistic work through several documents related to the exhibition Entertaining the Cauldron of Snakes: Shedding Skins.

The two sound files in this collection were recorded when Dr. Colodny visited Ottawa to take part in the Women in STEM Oral History project (linked below). The two recordings in this collection consist of a presentation that Dr. Colodny gave to Meghan Tibbits-Lamirande's Cultural Studies class (ENGL3911) at Carleton University on November 20th, 2023, and a supplementary interview which took place shortly afterwards, at the University of Ottawa’s Archives and Special Collections.

This fonds contains records for the Regional Coordinating Committee to End Violence Against Women (RCCEVAW) from 1984 until 2006, when they changed their name to the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW). The fonds includes administrative records and correspondence related to the RCCEVAW steering committee, their numerous subcommittees and task forces, and the organizations that grew out of their work. The RCCEVAW also collected records related to violence against women, including research material, newspaper clippings, policy documents, police protocol, and more.
