Canadian Women's Movement Archives (CWMA) collection

This collection contains records in various formats; including original organizational records, posters, buttons, t-shirts, flyers, publications, etc., from more than 2,000 Canadian women’s organizations, conferences and individuals. The records date from 1960 up until the mid-1990s and were collected by the Collective of the Canadian Women's Movement Archives. Material dated after 1992 was added after the CWMA collection was donated to the University of Ottawa Library (see Immediate Source of Acquisition for more detail).

This fonds consists of the administrative records of the Canadian Women's Movement Archives (CWMA) from its beginnings in the early 1970s as part of the Women's Information Centre (WIC) until its demise in 1992. It includes meeting minutes, for both CWMA and WIC, and administrative documents on human resources planning and day-to-day log books. It also contains financial documents such as accounting books and bank accounts, as well as correspondence and project/funding proposals. Also included are resources such as newspaper clippings and articles on various subjects, listed alphabetically, which were used as a reference by the members of CWMA.

Ce fonds est constitué des documents administratifs des Archives du Mouvement Canadien des Femmes (AMCF), depuis ses débuts au début des années 1970 au sein du Centre d'information pour les femmes jusqu'à sa disparition en 1992. Il comprend des procès-verbaux de réunions, tant pour la collection AMCF que pour le centre d’information pour les femmes, ainsi que des documents administratifs sur la planification des ressources humaines et des carnets de bord quotidiens. Il contient également des documents financiers tels que des livres comptables et des comptes bancaires, ainsi que de la correspondance et des propositions de projets/de financement. It also contains documents relating to the Healthsharing Book, including funding application, correspondence with authors and proofs. The records are arranged according to eight series; Minutes, Administration, Financial Records, Promotion and Distribution, Editorial Development, Healthsharing Book, and Correspondence.

The Helen Levine fonds, 1931-2018, documents Helen Levine’s activities within the women's movement, as well as her social work and teaching career at the School of Social Work of Carleton University. The fonds illustrates Helen Levine’s implementation of a feminist perspective into school curricula.
The fonds also reflects Helen Levine's advocacy and social work practice. The fonds features conference and workshop programs as well as administrative records, news clippings, and resource materials. The advocacy records show Helen Levine's community work and her involvement in issues such as motherhood, friendship, violence against women, and women's rights. The fonds also contains Helen Levine's published works and personal correspondence.

This sub-series contains Helen Levine's published and non-published essays, presentations, speeches, and articles. The sub-series especially focuses on feminist topics and includes Helen Levine's journal publication, "The Personal is Political: Feminism and the Helping Professions."

Publicity for "Between friends"

This sub-series contains correspondence, records, and some photographs concerning Helen Levine and Oonagh Berry's 2006 book entitled, "Between Friends." The file also contains one CD-ROM of launch photographs. The series documents the evolution of Helen Levine and Oonagh Berry's letter correspondence project.

Manuscripts

This sub-series consists of Helen Levine's undeveloped manuscripts, including a book-length project entitled, “Swimming Upstream.” This manuscript is largely based on Helen Levine's Freefall writing workshops from an Ottawa-based writing group. The Freefall method involves writing without self-editing or forethought in order to disengage from the limitations of the ego.
