In 1989, Becki Ross a PH.D student in sociology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto began doing research for her thesis by conducting interviews with former members of the Lesbian Organization of Toronto (LOOT). In her interviews she specifically questioned what the political, social, racial and class structures were at LOOT and the reason for the disbanding of LOOT. She carried her interviews with twenty-eight members from 1988 to 1990.

With these interviews, Becki Ross was able to obtain an oral history of the organization, in which each member tells her point of view on the successes and failures of LOOT. With these and other documentation Becki Ross went on to write an article entitled “The House That Jill Built: Lesbian Feminist Organizing in Toronto, 1976-1980” as well as a book The House That Jill Built: A Lesbian Nation in Formation.

The Becki Ross’ Lesbian Organization of Toronto Oral History Project provides valuable information on the way in which LOOT functioned from its conception to its demise. She recorded interviews on 49 audio cassettes with prominent members of LOOT. The interviews provide candid information on the nature of LOOT and the way in which each member recalls and interprets the events surrounding LOOT and the lesbian community of Toronto. They discuss a variety of subjects such as the internal political and social functions at LOOT and its eventual demise. They also discuss several events in the Toronto area such as the Bi-national Lesbian Conference, Anita Bryant and the Body Politic article “Men Loving Boys Loving Men”.

The Women’s Career Counselling Service of Ottawa (WCC) fonds documents the feminist employment service’s lobby for survival when faced with budget cutbacks and with the cessation of federal funding in 1996. The fonds is especially focused on correspondence with Members of Parliament, objecting to the closing of the Outreach Program and supporting WCC’s continued operation. The fonds also documents the organization’s founding and the services and programs unique to WCC. The fonds includes minutes of meetings, reports, client surveys and records related to special events such as its anniversary celebrations.

Le fonds de L’Orientation au travail pour les femmes d’Ottawa (OTF) documente les pressions exercées par le service d'emploi féministe pour survivre face aux compressions budgétaires et à la cessation du financement fédéral en 1996. Le fonds est particulièrement axé sur la correspondance avec les membres du Parlement, s'opposant à la fermeture du programme d'extension et soutenant la poursuite des activités de l’OTF. Le fonds documente également la fondation de l'organisation et les services et programmes propres à l’OTF. Le fonds comprend des procès-verbaux de réunions, des rapports, des enquêtes auprès des clients et des documents relatifs à des événements spéciaux tels que les célébrations de l'anniversaire de l'organisation.

This fonds consists of administrative and organizational documents, correspondence, galley proofs, financial records, original manuscripts and galley proofs, flyers, handbills, pamphlets, postcards, subscriber lists and information, planning documents from the Canadian Feminist Periodicals Conference 1986, two computer diskettes, and one metal telephone index pad. There are also separate files from several individual employees which include correspondence and items relating to their particular role in the collective.

These records offer significant information about feminist journalism in Canada, and about activities in the women’s movement, particularly in Toronto, during the 1980s.
