Phase 1 - 2023 Oral History Interviews

Phase 1 of the Women in STEM Oral History Project was a joint initiative between the University of Ottawa Archives and Special Collections (ARCS), the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), and the Canadian Institute of Women in Engineering and Sciences (CIWES), was conducted over the course of the Fall 2023 semester. Marina Bokovay (head of ARCS) supervised the project, and Meghan Tibbits-Lamirande (ARCS storyteller-in-residence) served as the primary interviewer and project coordinator. Ten interviews with women of significance to the history of Canadian Women in STEM were conducted. Two out of ten interviews were conducted by Marie Noel (ARCS Archivist) in French. Each interview was recorded, either in-person or via Zoom, using the RODE Audio Interface in the Learning Crossroads building at the University of Ottawa.

La phase 1 du projet d'histoire orale des femmes en STIM était une initiative conjointe entre les Archives et collections spéciales de l'Université d'Ottawa (ARCS), la Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire (CCSN) et l'Institut canadien des femmes en génie et en sciences (CIWES), a été menée au cours du semestre d'automne 2023. Marina Bokovay (responsable de l'ARCS) a supervisé le projet, et Meghan Tibbits-Lamirande (conteuse en résidence de l'ARCS) a joué le rôle d'intervieweuse principale et de coordinatrice du projet. Dix entretiens avec des femmes importantes pour l'histoire des femmes canadiennes dans les STIM ont été réalisés. Deux des dix entretiens ont été menés en français par Marie Noel (archiviste de l'ARCS). Chaque entretien a été enregistré, soit en personne, soit via Zoom, à l'aide de l'interface audio RODE dans le bâtiment Learning Crossroads de l'Université d'Ottawa.

Monique Frize a reçu plusieurs doctorats honorifiques et des prix prestigieux. Cette série est constituée de documents relatifs aux distinctions qu'elle a reçues au cours de sa carrière. Elle contient des documents textuels tels que des certificats, des diplômes, des feuillets d’information, mais également des objets tels que des cadres et des plaques souvenirs. Quelques photographies illustrent certaines cérémonies de remises de prix. Il comprend également des vidéos produites par Ingénieurs Canada à l'occasion de la Journée internationale des femmes en ingénierie (INWED), dont une brève interview rendant hommage à la carrière de Monique Frize.

Monique Frize has received several honorary doctorates and prestigious awards. This series consists of records related to the distinctions she received during her career. It contains textual documents such as certificates, diplomas, information sheets, but also objects such as frames and souvenir plaques. A few photographs illustrate some of the award ceremonies. It also includes videos produced by Engineers Canada for International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), featuring a brief interview honouring Monique Frize's career.

This series contains an International Women's Day scrapbook and prints of women's fashions, possibly for her book "Petticoats and Prejudice."

ICWES Reminiscences | Réminiscences de l'ICWES

This series contains reminiscences of women who attended the International Conferences for Women Engineers and Scientists. [Reminiscences were used in preparation of the publication, "Women's Contribution to Science and Technology through ICWES Conferences" by Monique Frize, Claire Deschênes and Ruby Heap (Springer: December 2023).

Feminist organizations and women's groups

This series consists of records generated by women’s groups and feminist organizations serving community women. The series includes files from Ottawa, Ontario, such as the Ottawa Women’s Centre Association, the Ottawa Women’s Centre and the Ottawa Women’s Credit Union.
The series consists mainly of administrative records, such as committee meeting notes, workshop notices, Shirley Greenberg’s requests for information and conference materials from organizations like the Older Women’s League. The series also contains a significant number of women’s groups’ newsletters.

The series includes communiqués from the Ottawa Centre federal riding women’s group of the New Democratic Party (NDP). The series includes the group’s resolutions for making women’s issues an election priority and records from the Waffle Women—a socialist caucus of the NDP.
