Mary Middlemore Poetry Collection

  • CA ON0034 30-016
  • フォンド
  • 1843-1880

The collection consists of 19 pieces of manuscript poetry, 5 letters, and a repurposed Canadian almanac that has 18 of Mary Middlemore's published pieces tipped in, as well as an additional 6 loose pieces (two of which are prose, the rest poetry, three of which appear to be duplicates of hand letterpress printed poems).

The majority of the material was written by Mary Manks Middlemore, with her name as 'Mrs. R. Middlemore' on a letterpress label identifying the collection as being her original poetry, except for a few of these poems labelled 'not mine', including one attributed to Mary Middlemore, presumably her niece and eventually daughter-in-law. The manuscript material may also contain poems by the junior, and possibly Thomas as well, though the majority seems to be from the elder Mary. While largely undated, the material seems entirely to have been written in Canada from the 1840s through the 1870s.

The group of five letters, 1834-1843, are addressed to Squire Manks of New Brunswick, the senior Mary's elder brother, and date from the period prior to the family's move to Canada. The letters include contributions by Robert Middlemore, the elder Mary, as well as the younger Mary, sometimes with multiple writers per letter. They provide background family details, and often discuss the possibility of emigration. In addition to the letters, the archive includes the marriage certificate of Thomas Middlemore and Mary Manks from 1849, a lock of the senior Mary's hair from 1880, and a card with the burial details of both Thomas and Mary Middlemore from the 1880s.

  • 1988-1990

In 1989, Becki Ross a PH.D student in sociology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto began doing research for her thesis by conducting interviews with former members of the Lesbian Organization of Toronto (LOOT). In her interviews she specifically questioned what the political, social, racial and class structures were at LOOT and the reason for the disbanding of LOOT. She carried her interviews with twenty-eight members from 1988 to 1990.

With these interviews, Becki Ross was able to obtain an oral history of the organization, in which each member tells her point of view on the successes and failures of LOOT. With these and other documentation Becki Ross went on to write an article entitled “The House That Jill Built: Lesbian Feminist Organizing in Toronto, 1976-1980” as well as a book The House That Jill Built: A Lesbian Nation in Formation.

The Becki Ross’ Lesbian Organization of Toronto Oral History Project provides valuable information on the way in which LOOT functioned from its conception to its demise. She recorded interviews on 49 audio cassettes with prominent members of LOOT. The interviews provide candid information on the nature of LOOT and the way in which each member recalls and interprets the events surrounding LOOT and the lesbian community of Toronto. They discuss a variety of subjects such as the internal political and social functions at LOOT and its eventual demise. They also discuss several events in the Toronto area such as the Bi-national Lesbian Conference, Anita Bryant and the Body Politic article “Men Loving Boys Loving Men”.

--

À partir de ces documents et d'autres, Becki Ross a pu rédiger un article intitulé "The House That Jill Built : Lesbian Feminist Organizing in Toronto, 1976-1980", ainsi qu'un livre intitulé The House That Jill Built : A Lesbian Nation in Formation.

  • 1912-1992

The collection consists of material personally collected by Dr. Staško. In the mid-seventies, Dr. Staško launched an appeal to his Slovak compatriots and friends from all over the world, to participate in the creation of the Slovak National Archives in the United States. In response to this request, some of Dr. Staško's contemporaries donated their personal papers and other collections related to Slovak history and culture. Dr. Staško's project of the American-based Slovak National Archives did not materialize for lack of physical and financial resources. However, as a result of Dr. Staško's initiative, important documents were collected from various sources.

The collection primarily consists of the personal papers of well know diplomats, politicians, professors, journalists, poets, and artists. It consists of correspondence, personal photographs, journals and memoirs, writing and poetry, as well as newspaper clippings, pamphlets and other collected materials.

The collection also includes the records of prominent Slovak organizations including the Slovak Action Committee, the Slovak League of America, and the Slovak World Congress.

These documents offer information on: the political history of Slovakia during its many regimes; the history and culture of the Slovak people living in Slovakia or abroad, especially in the United States and Canada. It provides important, and often unique information on Slovak political, cultural, and nationalist organizations aimed at the conservation and survival of the Slovak heritage.

This fonds may contain information related to sensitive historical events, particularly the Second World War. Some individuals mentioned or depicted in these archives may have been involved, directly or indirectly, in war, collaboration with authoritarian regimes, or support for the Nazi regime.
