Biographical history

Ann B. Denis était sociologue et professeur à l'Université d'Ottawa. Elle était une éminente chercheuse dans le domaine des relations de pouvoir au sein des sociétés, en particulier en ce qui concerne le sexe, la race, la classe sociale, l'éducation et l'internet. Denis a obtenu son baccalauréat en sociologie à l'Université Carleton avant de s'inscrire à l'Université de Londres, où elle a obtenu une maîtrise et un doctorat, également en sociologie.

Denis a enseigné à l'Université Bishop's et à l'Université Western Ontario avant de devenir membre du département de sociologie de l'Université d'Ottawa en 1973. Pendant son séjour à l'Université d'Ottawa, elle a été nommée directrice du département à plusieurs reprises. Elle a également été un membre éminent de l'Institut canadien de recherches sur les femmes (ICREF), dont elle a été présidente et membre du comité de l'Organisation des Nations unies. Denis a pris sa retraite de l'enseignement en 2009, mais a continué à s'impliquer dans l'Université d'Ottawa et l'ICREF jusqu'à sa mort en 2019. À sa retraite, elle a été nommée professeure émérite de l'Université d'Ottawa.

Ann B. Denis was a sociologist and professor at the University of Ottawa. She was a prominent researcher in the area of power relations within societies, particularly in regard to gender, race, class, education and the internet. Denis completed a Bachelor's in sociology at Carleton University before attending the University of London, where she completed a Master's and Ph.D, also in sociology.

Denis taught at Bishop's University and the University of Western Ontario before becoming a member of the Department of Sociology at the University of Ottawa in 1973. While at the University of Ottawa, she was appointed director of the Department on multiple occasions. She was also a prominent member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW), where she served as president and as a member on the organization's United Nations Committee. Denis retired from teaching in 2009, but continued to be involved with the University of Ottawa and CRIAW until her death in 2019. Upon retirement, she was named professor emerita of the University of Ottawa.

The fonds largely consists of papers, abstracts and seminar presentations authored or co-authored by Ann B. Denis. The fonds also includes 6 readings booklets for courses taught by Denis at the University of Ottawa between 1997 and 2008, and 2 plaques awarded to her by the University of Ottawa.
