In ... »the 1980s, a coordinating committee made up of professors and students from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences developed the framework for a program in Women's Studies. In 1983, the creation of a bilingual program in Women's Studies was officially approved by the Senate. The program is offered at the undergraduate level and is attached to the Office of the Vice-President, Academic. In 1985, the Department of the Secretary of State granted a Joint Chair in Women's Studies at the Universities of Ottawa and Carleton. In 1995, a fully bilingual, multidisciplinary program in Women's Studies at the Master's level was established. The objective of the program is to combine graduate studies in a particular discipline with the feminist approach and issues developed in Women's Studies. In 1999, the Women's Studies Institute replaced the Women's Studies program. In 2004, the Women's Studies Institute was transferred to the administration of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Dans les années 1970, quelques pionnières provenant de diverses disciplines telles que English, Histoire, Lettres françaises, Psychologie, Sciences politique, Sciences religieuses et Sociologie développement les premiers cours traitant de questions reliées aux femmes à l’Université d’Ottawa. Dans les années 1980, un comité de coordination constitué de professeures et d’étudiantes de la Faculté des arts et de la Faculté des sciences sociales, conçoit le canevas d’un programme en études des femmes. En 1983, la création d’un programme bilingue en études des femmes est approuvée officiellement par le Sénat. Le programme est offert au niveau du premier cycle et rattaché au cabinet du vice-recteur aux études. En 1985, le Secrétariat d’État accorde une Chaire conjointe en études des femmes aux Universités d’Ottawa et de Carleton. En 1995, un programme pluridisciplinaire entièrement bilingue en études des femmes au niveau de la maîtrise est mis en place. L’objectif du programme est de combiner des études de deuxième cycle dans une discipline particulière avec l’approche féministe et les problématiques développées en études des femmes. En 1999, l’Institut d’études des femmes remplace le programme en études des femmes. En 2004, l’Institut d’études des femmes passe sous l’administration de la Faculté des sciences sociales. Victoria Rape Relief Society

The Victoria Rape Crisis Centre was established in 1975 by a group of women as a self-funded collective. It formed a coalition with other rape crisis centres in British Columbia in order to pool funding applications. The founders’ objectives were to ... »provide rape crisis advocacy and to help women establish and increase control over their lives, to enquire into the causes of sexual violence, and to raise awareness about rape as serious crime. The centre employed two staff members, recruited several volunteers and was composed of different committees. The members aimed to develop a horizontal collective. The collective proposed presentations in high schools. They offered various workshops and courses on women’s self-defence, on-call counselling for women who had been raped or assaulted. They worked with the police in order to assist raped women and help them with the legal process. In 1977, the Victoria Rape Crisis Centre received a grant from the federal government to produce a booklet. Staff members and volunteers collaborate to produce the Booklet “Rape”. The Centre also participated to the creation of the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres. It hosted a national conference in 1978 with the objective to form this association. The Victoria Rape Society was closed in 1982. The “Victoria Sexual Assault Centre” was founded the same year and opened its doors in 1983. Contrary to the original centre, the “Victoria Sexual Assault Centre” was not part of the British Columbia coalition crisis centres.

Le Victoria Rape Crisis Centre a été créé en 1975 par un groupe de femmes sous la forme d'un collectif autofinancé. Il a formé une coalition avec d'autres centres d'aide aux victimes de viols en Colombie-Britannique afin de regrouper les demandes de financement. Les objectifs des fondateurs étaient de fournir des services d'aide aux victimes de viols et d'aider les femmes à prendre le contrôle de leur vie, d'enquêter sur les causes de la violence sexuelle et de sensibiliser la population au fait que le viol est un crime grave. Le centre employait deux personnes, recrutait plusieurs bénévoles et était composé de différents comités. Les membres avaient pour objectif de développer un collectif horizontal. Le collectif a proposé des présentations dans les écoles secondaires. Il a proposé divers ateliers et cours sur l'autodéfense des femmes, ainsi qu'un service de conseil sur appel pour les femmes violées ou agressées. Il travaille avec la police afin d'assister les femmes violées et de les aider dans leurs démarches juridiques. En 1977, le Victoria Rape Crisis Centre a reçu une subvention du gouvernement fédéral pour produire une brochure. Les membres du personnel et les bénévoles collaborent à la production de la brochure ""Rape"". Le Centre a également participé à la création de l'Association canadienne des centres d'aide aux victimes d'agression sexuelle. Il a accueilli une conférence nationale en 1978 dans le but de créer cette association. La Victoria Rape Society a été fermée en 1982. Le ""Victoria Sexual Assault Centre"" a été fondé la même année et a ouvert ses portes en 1983. Contrairement au centre d'origine, le ""Victoria Sexual Assault Centre"" ne faisait pas partie de la coalition des centres de crise de la Colombie-Britannique. «

Lisa Bengtsson was born in 1951. She grew up in Naikina, Ontario–a single industry rail town. From 1974-2007, Lisa Bengtsson worked for the Secretary of State, Women’s Program, for the Northwestern Ontario district—the region in Ontario bordered by Manitoba, White River, and James Bay.

Lisa Bengtsson delivered human rights-based programs, including the Aboriginal Women’s Program, the Friendship Centre Program, the Voluntary Action Program, and the Disabled Persons Program. In the mid-1990s, she transferred from the Secretary of State to Employment and Immigration. Finally she moved to the Status of Women Canada. Her work focussed on project funding, skill development, organizational development, strategic planning, action research, and advocacy.

Lisa Bengtsson was also a program officer for organizations such as the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses and the Ontario Native Women’s Association. She participated in issue-based partnerships with local Thunder Bay organizations, such as women’s training opportunities, (1992-94), family violence, (1978-85), and women in conflict with the law, (2003-2006).

Lisa Bengtsson undertook a major post audit of family violence funding (1989) and managed the Northwestern Ontario Secretary of State district office, (mid-1980s). She also managed the Women’s Program, Ontario Region, (mid-1990s.) She served on internal committees at the national level concerning the prevention of family violence, (1991-92,1997).

Lisa Bengtsson’s volunteer and professional work were grounded in the Secretary of State mandate, “to increase citizen’s participation in decisions affecting the quality of their lives.” In 2005, Lisa Bengtsson was awarded the Ontario Federal Council Leadership Through Collaboration Award, as a result of her partnership with the Equay Wuk Women’s Group of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

Judy Rebick is a well-known feminist activist, journalist, author, and speaker. Rebick earned her Bachelor of Science in psychology from McGill University, in 1967, and became involved in leftist politics from an early age; she wrote for the McGill Daily ... »during her undergraduate career and served as president of the Ontario NDP Women’s Committee from 1987 to 1988. Rebick became especially involved with feminist issues in the 1980s, acting as spokesperson for the Ontario Coalition for Abortion Clinics while working as the Canadian Hearing Society’s Special Project Director (1980-1992). Rebick was subsequently appointed president of Canada’s largest women’s organization, the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC), where she worked from 1990 to 1993. From 2002-2010 Judy Rebick held the Canadian Auto Workers–Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at Metropolitan University, (formerly Ryerson University).
During Rebick’s presidency, NAC achieved a high public profile as it helped implement pay equity legislation and increased women’s access to abortion services and rape crisis centres. Key campaigns under Rebick’s presidency included the NAC says No campaign during the referendum on the Charlottetown Accord. Rebick’s presidency also involved extensive media work and lobbying actions on key issues such as abortion law, new reproductive technologies and employment equity.
After her departure from NAC, Rebick launched a career in journalism, hosting the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) television programs Face Off (1994-1998) and Straight from the Hip (1998-2000). She helped found the online leftist magazine, Rabble, and is still politically active as author as well as radio and television political commentator.
Judy Rebick has authored numerous book-length works, including “Ten Thousand Roses: The Making of a Feminist Revolution” (2005), Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political (2009) and Occupy This! (regarding the Occupy movement, in 2012). In 2018, Rebick published her memoirs: Heroes in my Head, chronicling her experiences with mental illness and her involvement in the pro-choice movement.

Elizabeth Shepherd was born in London, England on 12 August, 1936. Her parents were Methodist missionaries in Burma where she spent her early childhood. She began her career as an actor in England before moving to Canada in 1972 to appear at the ... »Stratford Festival Theatre. She has worked extensively there, as well as in the United States and in England, performing in theatre, movies and television. She teaches Shakespeare and the English classics and has held seminars/workshops at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals.
Elizabeth had been interested in women’s issues through Voice of Women for Peace but became more actively involved when she was inspired by Michele Landsberg’s description of the Women’s Action Coalition in the US. When it was decided to start a similar action in Canada, she became an enthusiastic member and was active throughout the 1990s. She was also involved in women’s organizations like METRAC, which raised awareness of violence against women, and has a special interest in women and the legal justice system. Elizabeth resides in New York. She has a son, Edmund Boys.

The Canadian Women’s Health Network (CWHN) was established by a group of women representing 70 organizations that worked within the women’s health movement. The CWHNN consisted of a network of individuals, groups and organizations working to address gender inequality in health systems–both within Canada and around the world. The organization aimed to provide women-centred health information through networking, resource-sharing, education, and advocacy.

The Canadian Women’s Health Network also addressed contemporary issues relating to women’s health, including inequitable health policies and practices. The organization disseminated health information online and established its ‘Clearinghouse,’ a centralized collection of women-centred health resources and networks. The CWHN’s branches of activities also included the production of “Network/Le Réseau,” a bilingual health magazine.

The CWHN conducted extended community outreach to speak to women’s health and health issues in diverse contexts. The organization also worked within the Women’s Health Contribution Program, Health Canada, and communicated the researching findings of its affiliated partners, such as the Centres of Excellence for Women’s Health and le Réseau québécois d’action pour la santé des femmes.

The CWHN consisted of a Coordinating Committee, as well as a Board of Directors. The CWHN suspended operations in 2014 due to lack of federal funding; the Board of Directors continued to operate for several years, before closing permanently in 2017.

Le Réseau canadien pour la santé des femmes (RCSF) a été créé par un groupe de femmes représentant 70 organisations actives dans le domaine de la santé des femmes. Le RCSF est un réseau d'individus, de groupes et d'organisations qui s'efforcent de remédier aux inégalités entre les sexes dans les systèmes de santé, tant au Canada que dans le monde entier. L'organisation vise à fournir des informations sur la santé des femmes par le biais du réseautage, du partage des ressources, de l'éducation et de la défense des droits.

Le Réseau canadien pour la santé des femmes s'intéresse également aux questions contemporaines liées à la santé des femmes, notamment aux politiques et pratiques de santé inéquitables. L'organisation diffuse des informations sur la santé en ligne et a créé son ""centre d'information"", une collection centralisée de ressources et de réseaux sur la santé des femmes. Les activités du RCSF comprennent également la production de ""Network/Le Réseau"", un magazine bilingue sur la santé.

Le RCSF a étendu ses activités à la communauté pour parler de la santé des femmes et des problèmes de santé dans divers contextes. L'organisation a également travaillé au sein du Programme de contribution pour la santé des femmes de Santé Canada et a communiqué les résultats de recherche de ses partenaires affiliés, tels que les Centres d'excellence pour la santé des femmes et le Réseau québécois d'action pour la santé des femmes.

Le RCSF est composé d'un comité de coordination et d'un conseil d'administration.
