Shirley Elizabeth (E.) Greenberg (née Schnell) was born to George Schnell and Elizabeth Bertha Schnell in 1931, in Ottawa, Ontario. In 1959 she was married to Irving Greenberg (1928-1991); she had three children.

Throughout her law studies and professional practice, Shirley E. Greenberg worked for women’s legal equality through advocacy, philanthropy and education.

In the early 1970s, Greenberg was inspired by second-wave feminism to pursue a law degree with the University of Ottawa. She attended law school as a mature, married student and as a mother of three. From March 14-16, 1974, she attended the founding conference of the National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL).

Working with the University of Ottawa’s NAWL chapter, Shirley E. Greenberg helped administer the organization’s 1975 summer project, delivering programs that raised awareness of the impact of legal inequities on women’s lives.

She also conducted research and wrote extensively about legal topics affecting women, such as child custody, family law, pensions, and unemployment insurance. She wrote for such feminist publications as “Upstream.”

Shirley E. Greenberg helped found the Ottawa Women’s Centre Association—a vital resource for community women. She also volunteered with Ottawa’s Rape Crisis Centre and Interval House.

After graduating from law school in 1976, Shirley E. Greenberg co-founded Ottawa’s first all-female law practice, in 1978. The law practice hosted women articling students, helping women establish law careers in male-dominated spaces. She was awarded an honourary doctorate from the University of Ottawa in 2003.

Shirley E. Greenberg also became a noted philanthropist. In 2005, she endowed the Shirley E. Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law, designated for feminist law faculty members. She established the Shirley E. Greenberg Women's Health Centre at the Ottawa Hospital’s Riverside campus, in 2005. In 2013 she funded the Shirley E. Greenberg Breast Cancer Imaging Suite at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. She also established the Shirley E. Greenberg Resource Centre for Women at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre.

In 2014, Shirley E. Greenberg was awarded the Outstanding Individual Philanthropist honour by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), in 2014. She was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2009 and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, in 2012.

Lee authored the book "Obsession with Intent: Violence Against Women" (2005) and numerous articles published in academic and non-academic journals on violence against women and women's rights. In 1995, Lee served as special advisor to Canada's Federal Minister of Justice as part of the Canadian delegation to the Ninth United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Treatment of the Offender. In 2013, Lee received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia in recognition of her service to social, economic, and legal equality for women.

Morris Kates was born in Galati, Romania, in 1923. He came to Canada with his parents in 1924 and grew up in Toronto. He studied music harmony, counterpoint, and composition as a hobby, along with his studies in science (physics, chemistry, and biochemistry) at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1948.
From 1950 until 1968 he worked at the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, first as a post-doctoral fellow and then as a research scientist. In 1968, he was appointed Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Ottawa, and in 1989 he retired as Professor Emeritus. He was renowned in the field of biochemistry for his discovery of the isopranyl glycerol diether lipids of Halobacterium and other members of the Halobacteriaceae. Among biochemists, Morris Kates is also best known for his textbook ‘Techniques in Lipidiology’ (1972, revised in 2010). Altogether Morris wrote about 250 scientific papers on lipid biochemistry and lipid metabolism. He received the Excellence in Research Award (1981), the Supelco Award for lipid research from the American Oil Chemist Society (1984) and was nominated as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1973).
Lipid biochemistry was one field in which Morris Kates was famous, music was the second. He published more than 20 compositions that include orchestral works, chamber music, choral works, and more. He showed an interest in his compositions in Impressionism, twelve-tone technique, neoclassicism, and more recently, Renaissance music. His major works are: Variations for Strings (1964), Symphonia for Strings (1967), Sonata for Cello and Piano (1973), Piano Trio “Hommage à Einstein” (1979), Elegiac Variations for Solo ‘Cello (1984), Woodwind Quintet (1988), Sonata for Double Bass and Piano (1989), and Festine Suite (1990). The first two of these compositions won him the CBC (Ottawa) Music Award for 1965 and 1967, respectively. Variations for Strings and Festive Suite have been performed by the University of Ottawa Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Currie. He was an Associate Composer with the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Canadian League of Composers. «

Sylvia Spring is born in Galt, Ontario on July 14, 1942. She is a Canadian feminist writer, filmmaker, and activist. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Buffalo in English Literature and Drama. In 1970, she produced Madeleine is…, the first Canadian English-language feature film directed by a woman since Nell Shipman in 1919. A segment of the film was released as a short feature under the name Madeleine and won an award at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 1970.
In 1979, she was appointed to the Task Force on Sex-Role Stereotyping in the Broadcast Media established by the Canadian minister responsible for the status of women. The Task Force was meant to examine the portrayal of women in popular media and developed guidelines for its improvement. Then, Sylvia Spring co-founded MediaWatch Canada, a watchdog organization dedicating to eliminating sexism in the media and became its first National Director. Sylvia Spring has spoken in national and international forums to raise awareness about the representation of women in the media. She has designed and facilitated workshops and lectures for agencies such as the Canadian Human Rights Commission, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In January 2000, as a communication consultant, she travelled to China with Bonnie Diamond, NAWL’s executive Director, to conduct workshops with grassroots Chinese women on the information dissemination techniques used by women’s group in Canada (Nawl.ca, consulted 2021-06-02).
In 1995, she produced Voices and Visions, a documentary series from the UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China. In 1996, she produced the documentary Breaking the Silence: Stories from AIDS Activists in Southern Africa. The documentary tells the stories of women working at the front lines of the AIDS epidemic. In 2000, she produced 20th Century Gals (According to Babe), which explored the women's movement of the 20th century. In 2005, she co-produced Our bodies...their battleground, a documentary about the sexual violence crisis facing women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia.

Née en 1954 à Grand-Mère (Québec), Claire a fait ses études primaire et secondaire chez les Ursulines (École St-Jean-Baptiste de Grand’Mère et Couvent St-Pierre de Shawinigan), son baccalauréat (diplôme en 1977) et de maîtrise en génie mécanique (diplôme ... »en 1986) à l’Université Laval avant de faire un doctorat nouveau (diplôme en 1990) à l’Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble en génie hydraulique (Labyrinthes dans les turbines Francis). Elle est embauchée à l’Université Laval en 1989 comme professeure assistante en génie mécanique pour remplacer le défunt professeur Herbert Netsch. Après sa soutenance de thèse, elle est promue comme professeure adjointe en 1990. Elle devint professeure agrégée en 1994, puis titulaire en 1998. Claire est actuellement retraitée (27 juin 2019) et a été nommée professeure associée du département de génie mécanique.
Sa carrière de chercheuse et ses réalisations sont divisées en deux grands centres d’intérêt. D’un côté, il y a les études expérimentales et numériques en génie hydraulique, particulièrement dans les turbines, les micro-turbines et les écoulements hydrauliques. Ingénieure prolifique, elle a fait plusieurs réalisations durables. Au début de sa carrière, elle a fondé (1994) le Laboratoire de machines hydrauliques (LAMH) de l’Université Laval, et l’a dirigé jusqu’à sa retraite, où sa succession a été assurées par le professeur Sébastien Houde. Elle a bâti une boucle d’essai de calibre international pour tester les turbines hydrauliques modèles et les micro-turbines. Dans les premières années, de ce laboratoire, les étudiant-e-s, chercheuses et chercheurs y ont réalisée des études de développement en génie hydraulique, en particulier des micro-turbines. De l’autre côté, Claire se passionne et milite pour une meilleure représentation des femmes en STIM (sciences, technologies, ingénierie et mathématique). Derrière ce but ultime, elle s’est associée avec de nombreuses institutions pour faire des recherches sur la situation scolaire, la place sociale et l’histoire des femmes canadiennes et québécoises en STIM. Le fonds d’archives est centré sur les principales réalisations concernant ce point d’intérêt.

Claire a été cofondatrice d’AFFESTIM en 2002 (Association de la francophonie à propos des femmes en sciences, technologies, ingénierie et mathématiques), d’INWES en 2002 (International Network for Women in Engineering and Sciences) et d’INWES-ERI en 2008 (Education and Research Institute). C’est justement dans le cadre d’INWES-ERI que Claire a participé au projet de création d’un corpus de fonds d’archives sur les femmes canadiennes en sciences et génie en collaboration avec la bibliothèque de l’Université d’Ottawa ainsi que Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. Ces associations ont réalisé plusieurs projets afin de comprendre les problématiques et la situation des femmes en STIM avant de proposer des solutions pour y remédier, comme OPUS, un centre WEB d’outils pédagogiques pour les professeur-e-s de sciences au secondaire et leurs élèves, afin de favoriser l’apprentissage de la physique du 2e cycle du secondaire au Québec, et F-STIM, un forum et site web destinés aux femmes comprenant de l’informations et des outils de partage sur les programmes scolaires et les carrières en STIM. Excepté INWES, Claire occupe encore des postes administratifs dans ces organisations et fait partie du comité-conseil de l’actuelle Chaire CRSNG pour les femmes en sciences et génie, dirigée par Ève Langelier, professeure à l’Université de Sherbrooke. En plus de la direction de la revue Recherches féministes depuis 2017, elle a occupé des postes-clés au sein de la Chaire Claire-Bonenfant (Femmes, Savoirs et Sociétés), dont la présidence du comité de direction de 2015 à 2019. À l’OIQ (Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec), elle a participé au comité Femmes en ingénierie, notamment à titre de présidente entre 2002 et 2007. Outre ces deux domaines et ses activités d’enseignement et de direction d’étudiant-e-s aux cycles supérieurs, Claire s’est impliquée dans plusieurs dossiers importants, particulièrement le SPPUL (Syndicat des Professeur(eure)s de l’Université Laval), des comités de sélection d’embauche de professeurs ou d’autres professionnels, des comités de programmes universitaires, des comités et la direction du département du génie mécanique, et les ressources pédagogiques pour les étudiants à l’Université Laval.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Claire a reçu de nombreux prix récompensant son travail. Born in 1954 in Grand-Mère (Québec), Claire did her primary and secondary education at the Ursulines (École St-Jean-Baptiste de Grand'Mère and Couvent St-Pierre de Shawinigan), her bachelor's degree (diploma in 1977) and her master's degree in mechanical engineering (diploma in 1986) at Laval University before doing a new doctorate (diploma in 1990) at the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble in hydraulic engineering (Labyrinths in Francis turbines). She was hired at Laval University in 1989 as an assistant professor in mechanical engineering to replace the late Professor Herbert Netsch. After her thesis defense, she was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1990. She became an associate professor in 1994, and then full professor in 1998. Claire is currently retired (June 27, 2019) and has been appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Her research career and accomplishments are divided into two main areas of interest. On the one hand, there are experimental and numerical studies in hydraulic engineering, particularly in turbines, micro-turbines and hydraulic flows. A prolific engineer, she has made several lasting achievements. Early in her career, she founded (1994) the Laboratoire de machines hydrauliques (LAMH) at Laval University, and directed it until her retirement, when her succession was assured by Professor Sébastien Houde. She built a world-class test loop for testing model hydraulic turbines and micro-turbines. In the early years of this laboratory, students and researchers carried out development studies in hydraulic engineering, in particular micro-turbines. In 2007, she founded the Consortium en machines hydrauliques, in which several multinational manufacturers of large hydraulic turbines, electricity producers, CANMET of the federal government and Laval University participate. With the Consortium, she has led major research projects such as AxialT and BulbT, which have led to the development of knowledge and the creation of experimental databases on turbines.
On the other hand, Claire is passionate about and advocates for a better representation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). With this ultimate goal in mind, she has partnered with numerous institutions to research the academic status, social place and history of Canadian and Quebec women in STEM. The archive focuses on the main achievements in this area of interest.

Claire was co-founder of AFFESTIM in 2002 (Association de la francophonie à propos des femmes en sciences, technologies, ingénierie et mathématiques), of INWES in 2002 (International Network for Women in Engineering and Sciences) and of INWES-ERI in 2008 (Education and Research Institute). It is precisely within the framework of INWES-ERI that Claire participated in the project to create a corpus of archival fonds on Canadian women in science and engineering in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Library and Library and Archives Canada. These associations have carried out several projects to understand the issues and situation of women in STEM and to propose solutions to address them, such as OPUS, a web-based pedagogical toolkit for high school science teachers and their students to promote the learning of senior high school physics in Quebec, and F-STIM, a forum and website for women that includes information and sharing tools on STEM curricula and careers. Apart from INWES, Claire still holds administrative positions in these organizations and is a member of the advisory committee of the current NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, headed by Ève Langelier, a professor at the Université de Sherbrooke. In addition to directing the journal Recherches féministes since 2017, she has held key positions within the Claire-Bonenfant Chair (Femmes, Savoirs et Sociétés), including chairing the steering committee from 2015 to 2019. At the OIQ (Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec), she participated in the Women in Engineering Committee, notably as president between 2002 and 2007. She has also been a member of numerous committees and organizations.
In addition to these two areas and her teaching and graduate student leadership activities, Claire has been involved in several important issues, particularly the SPPUL (Syndicat des Professeur(eure)s de l'Université Laval), selection committees for the hiring of professors and other professionals, university program committees, committees and leadership of the mechanical engineering department, and pedagogical resources for students at Laval University.
Throughout her career, Claire has received numerous awards for her work. Elizabeth Sheehy holds an LL.B., an LL.M., and an LL.D. (Honoris causa). She started teaching at the University of Ottawa in 1984 and has been a Full Professor since 1995. She held the Shirley Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession from 2013 to 2015 and previously held the Chair when it was first established in 2002-2004. Professor Sheehy has participated in various educational programs for the Canadian Judicial Institute on topics such as sexual assault, wife assault, and women and girls in the justice system. In 1999 she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Common Law Students’ Society at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law.

She has been a Member of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1987. She was co-counsel for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) in its intervention in R v JA (“advance consent” to sexual assault) (2011 SCC 28).

Professor Sheehy is involved in many other law reform activities around equality rights and social justice issues. In 2009 she convened the first national conference in Canada on sexual assault law, entitled Sexual Assault Law, Practice and Activism in a Post-Jane Doe Era and currently sits on the Advisory Board for Informed Opinions, a national organization dedicated to including women’s expert voices in Canadian public discourse.

Valerie Overend was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1953. During the 1990s, Valerie worked as a Red Seal Carpenter on commercial construction projects in the Regina area with the local Carpenters Union. Valerie had never met another woman on a construction site and knew that she wanted to do something to change that situation. She knew that women wanted to work in physical, creative, well-paying jobs but that they were limited by opportunity. She took advantage of her role as a summer instructor and moved into creating other programs for girls and women, maintaining the focus on career exploration in trades and technology. For the next 25 years, Valerie made her living expanding on that role until to her retirement.

In the 1970s, Saskatchewan Women in Trades & Technology (SaskWITT), a provincial organization that promotes and assists in the recruitment and training of girls and young women in predominantly male fields, was established. In the early 1990s, Valerie represented SaskWITT on the Board of the WITT National Network. That organization also developed programs to guide women into careers in trades and technology occupations. Valerie was on the team of WITT instructors from across Canada who met to develop National Standards and Guidelines for WITT programs in Canada. These were updated and revised again near the end of the decade to reflect changes in the landscape of trades and technology occupations. This work was fundamental in the development of curriculum resources that were introduced in all provinces and territories in Canada, many of them still in use.

In 1991, Valerie was approached by the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) to teach summer camps to introduce grades 7 and 8 girls to careers in trades and technology. With Valerie at the helm, SIAST campuses delivered summer Girls Exploring Trades and Technology Camps, GETT Alumnae workshops for high school girls, weekend Kids in the Shop Programs, a Kindergarten project where role models visited 60 classes each year, Women in Trades and Women in Technology Exploratory Programs, Career Fairs and variations of all of these for Aboriginal girls and women.

In 1995, she co-founded the Women’s Work Training Program in Regina, Saskatchewan. Throughout her career, Valerie sat on numerous Boards and Committees representing tradeswomen. These include the Saskatchewan Education Council, Saskatchewan Carpenters Trade Board, Saskatchewan Provincial Apprenticeship Board, the Saskatchewan Labour Market Initiatives Committee to the Canadian Construction Association, and the Women’s Reference Group to the Provincial Labour Force Development Board. Nationally, Valerie represented Saskatchewan as a Director of the Canadian Vocational Association, WITT NN, and CCWESTT. Through her involvement with these organizations, Valerie held Director positions with the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum and the National Women’s Reference Group on Labour Market Initiatives.

Aside from working directly with girls and women, Valerie began to work with employers and unions to resolve some of the barriers that conspired to keep women out of jobs in various industries. She worked both as a private consultant and as a consultant with WITT NN on various Employment Equity and Retention projects throughout the decade. Valerie’s work often involved travel, primarily in Canada. Over time, Valerie worked not only with the Construction Industry but also with Oil and Gas, and Mining Industries. She had contracts in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, and all of the Western Provinces and Ontario. As well, Valerie’s work once took her to Malawi in Africa.

When WITT NN dissolved in the early 2000s, Valerie was invited to work as a consultant to a project by the Canadian Coalition of Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (CCWESTT). This resulted in the formation of the WinSETT Centre, a mechanism established to expand and support women’s participation in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology. Valerie became the Trades Consultant for the organization and worked to establish a pan-Canadian presence among unions, employers, and employer associations through delivery of programs and services.

Valerie has received both local and national recognition for her work. In 1992, she was awarded the Governor General’s 125 Medal for community volunteerism and she also recognized by the YWCA Regina as a Woman of Distinction. In 2005, Valerie received the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. These awards recognize her dedicated work as a role model inspiring young women in non-traditional fields.
