Dr. Catherine Ahearn (see also Catherine Firestone) was born in 1949 in a prominent Ottawa family. She received a Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of Ottawa in 1979. She is a bilingual author in Canada and abroad, with a wide range of writing accomplishments including poetry, prose, journalistic essays, short films, and ballet productions.
Ahearn’s parents, Otto Jack Firestone (1913-1993) and Isobel Bella Torontow (1913-2002), were enthusiastic art collectors. Their home in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa (Belmanor) was both a family residence and an art gallery. The family formed bonds with several well-known Canadian artists, including Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson. The family’s art collection, “Firestone Collection of Canadian Art,” is owned by the City of Ottawa, and is under the custodianship of the Ottawa Art Gallery. Ahearn has three siblings.
She attended Rockcliffe Park Public School (1955-1962), Elmwood Private School (1962-1966), both in Ottawa, as well as McGill University in Montreal between 1966 and 1970, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in French Literature; during this time, she also spent a year studying at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France (1968-1969). Subsequently, Ahearn obtained her Master’s in Arts from the University of Ottawa in French Canadian Literature in 1971, and her doctorate from the University of Ottawa in French Literature in 1979, with her final thesis on French surrealism: “Cahiers de Jacques Baron: Texte et Commentaire”.
Ahearn published two collections of poetry in 1976: "L’Âge de l’aube" appeared to good reviews in Paris while "Daydream Daughter," published by McClelland and Stewart, won the prestigious AJM Smith Poetry Prize from Michigan State University. Ahearn published further collections of poetry, including "Poasis" (1980), "Thus Spoke Superman" (1981), "Luna-Verse" (1984), and "Concha and Rezanov" (1987), which includes a provocative foreword by former Ambassador Ken Taylor. She also published a book of young adult fiction, "Cristobel," featuring an introduction by Governor General Jules Léger and drawings by Methuen’s awarded-winning illustrator, Laszlo Gal.
Her success as a poet led to her appointment by the Mayor of Ottawa as first Poet Laureate, 1982-1984. A story tells that Ahearn approached the mayor of the then-Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Marion Dewar, to establish the position to “help promote the City of Ottawa as well as enrich the lives of its citizens.” Including Ahearn, Ottawa had three poet laureates with three-year terms each, who were expected to write six poems annually and to attend various events across the community. She self-published the poems written during her tenure in Poet Laureate poems, 1982-1984 (1984). The program was re-established by the city in 2017 by VerseOttawa.
The Ottawa Citizen has said of Ahearn’s work: “Her views are original, sometimes startling, always thought-provoking. (She) gives us a new idiom in Canadian poetry... There is no doubt we shall be hearing a great deal more from her to the considerable enrichment of Canadian literature.”
Ahearn’s first novel, "The Estonian Affair", researched in Estonia, U.S.S.R., and the U.S., and co-written with Marion Daniel Bailey, is an international espionage thriller represented by a Toronto agent. In 1988 she started a second novel, "The Curse of Ebal", an explosive family saga set in the U.S., Europe, and Israel. Ahearn has travel to the Middle East to research her novel, "West of Sodom," and drafted numerous works, both prose and poetry.
Ahearn’s novels are written with an eye to feature film production. Writing for film and television has been an additional venue for Ahearn. Her short film screenplay, "Reaping Our Past," won two Canadian awards. She also wrote a game show in 1972 which was later produced by Twentieth Century Fox, and several other game shows. Her screenplay, “Cloud Nine”, brought to Hollywood in 1977, was later produced with James Garner under the title “The Tank”. Ahearn devoted much of her time to commercial fiction and film/TV development.

Mann was born in 1941 in Ottawa, Canada, to two high school teachers of English: Walter Beresford Mann (1910-1995) and Marjorie Mann, née Diehl (1909-1993). Her sister, Gretchen Mann Brewin (b. 23 December 1938) was a politician in British Columbia. Mann was married twice, and occasionally used both her maiden and married names: Robertson and Trofimenkoff, during her work. She had one daughter in 1962.
Educated in Canada, Scotland and Switzerland, Susan Mann received her B.A. (honours) in Modern History from the University of Toronto in 1963, her master’s in 1965 from the University of Western Ontario, and her doctorate in 1970 from Université Laval in Québec. She spent a year teaching English in Tokyo, Japan, 1963-1964. Her first university appointment was at the Université de Montréal, where she taught English-Canadian History in French, 1966-1970 and then at the University of Calgary, where she taught French-Canadian History in English, 1970-1972. The University of Ottawa offered her the opportunity to teach in both languages and she remained there as Assistant, Associate and later full Professor in the History Department, 1972-1992.
While in Ottawa, she assessed projects for the SSHRCC and was the Academic Editor for Social Sciences in Canada, 1974-1976. She chaired the Aid to Scholarly Publications Committee of the Social Science Federation of Canada [now the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada], 1976-79. Mann was a founding member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) in 1976 and of Senior Women's Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC) in 1987. She participated in annual meetings of the Canadian Historical Association, of which she was president 1984-5. She chaired the Status of Women Committee of the Council of Ontario Universities, 1985-88.
At the University of Ottawa, Mann chaired the Department of History, 1977-1980 and was appointed Vice-Rector Academic, 1984-90. She was also a member of the university's Senate, Board of Governors, Arts Faculty Council, School of Graduate Studies, and APUO. Notably, she was a co-organizer of the University of Ottawa’s Women’s Studies program, founded in 1982 by a group of cross-disciplinary feminist scholars including Caroline Andrew, Ann Denis and Marie-Laure Girou-Swiderski.
Dr. Susan Mann was the first woman to be appointed as President of York University, 1992-1997.
Visiting professorships brought her back to Montréal and Ottawa: McGill’s Centre for Research and Teaching on Women, 1997-2002, and the Institute of Women's Studies at the University of Ottawa, 2000. In 2002, she chaired the university's Task Force on Inter-disciplinarity/Groupe de travail sur l'interdiscplinarité.
Throughout her career, Mann taught various courses in history, including Post-Confederation Canada, Quebec, French-Canadian Nationalism, Canadian Social History, Canadian Women’s History, Women and the First World War, Femmes, Nation et Nationalisme. She also directed several MA and PhD theses and is the author and editor of several publications in Canadian history, Quebec, women, and military history. In recognition of her work and services to academic institutions, she has been the recipient of several awards and honours, among them the Royal Society of Canada and the Order of Canada.
In retirement in Montreal, Mann has continued to pursue research and writing, as well as exploring her artistic interests, particularly via sculpture.

Maxine Sylvia (born Haugen) Glover worked in communications specializing in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife in British Columbia. She was born on September 8th, 1950, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1970, Maxine was the first and only woman to graduate with a Diploma of Technology from the Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Management Option of the Forest Resource Technology Program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Burnaby, BC.
Maxine began her career as an Information Technician for the Government of Canada Fisheries and Marine Services in Vancouver from 1970-1977; then worked as Publications Editor for the BC Central One Credit Union from 1977-1978.
In 1979, she was a freelance writer and consultant and went on to found and be president of her own company, Glover Business Communications Ltd. The company had seven full-time staff by 1986, and clients were federal and provincial government departments; forest, transportation, manufacturing, and construction companies; an international commission; a federally funded public group; financial institutions; and a private foundation. The company dissolved in 1989.
Projects include work on the province-wide Public Awareness Program for the Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP), 1979 – 1989, providing secretariat services for the Salmonid Enhancement Task Group and Board.
During her sabbatical, 1986-1989, Maxine researched, wrote, and supervised the design and production of three 1987 – 1989 annual reports for International Forest Products Limited; edited the first annual report in 1988 on the implementation of the federal and provincial governments’ agreement with Alcan Aluminium regarding the Nechako River. From 1989-1995, Maxine was Editor for the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada and worked as a freelance business editor and writer from 1995-2000.
Maxine worked on the province-wide Public Awareness Program for the Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP), 1979 – 1989. She provided secretariat services for the Salmonid Enhancement Task Group, a province-wide body formed to provide public input into the SEP, and to the Salmonid Enhancement Board, a high-level board of industry and First Nations representatives, which provided some direction to the SEP.
Professional and business activities include being a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada (EAC), teaching marketing and business development workshops, and writing articles for the association’s newsletters; being a member of The Logan Lake Chamber of Commerce and serving as secretary in 1997/98.
Maxine received several communications awards from the BC Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators; edited scholarly works in the field of accounting and many other books and courses in auditing, accounting, ethics, and financial and strategic management.
